If you are a trekking enthusiast looking for an experience that combines natural beauty and history, the trail from the hamlet of Enna to Fort Enna is perfect for you.
This route offers striking views and an opportunity to explore a piece of history surrounded by nature.
Here is a detailed guide to tackling this path.
Departure
- Starting point: Square behind the Parish Church of St. John the Baptist in the hamlet of Enna.
- Direction: Contrada Sberze.
- Landmarks: Pass the Bar/Trattoria ai Combattenti on the right.
- You cross the district to the votive capital dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes located in the middle of the road.
Toward Contrada Lake
- Continue to the left in the direction of Contrada Lago.
- After about 120 meters, turn left onto the driveway going uphill.
- This section is part of the Rogazioni Trail, which, without detouring and keeping uphill, leads to cross the driveway coming from Contrada Maule after 800 meters.
Toward Fort Enna
- Continue to the right on the level for about 1 km to the end of the driveway.
- Past the cottage on the left, continue straight up and down on the narrow path that enters the forest.
- After about 300 meters (last wider uphill stretch), you reach the hairpin bend of the “White Houses” dirt road at 756 m above sea level.
- Here you will find CAI S.3 signage indicating arrival at Fort Enna in 40 minutes.
- Continue uphill and, after four hairpin bends (the last two close together) and a slightly uphill section, you arrive at the junction to Fort Enna (1.6 km).
- Turn left and go up following the sign for Fort Enna.
Between the Beeches and Fort Enna
- Continue among beech trees on wide dirt road uphill, passing the district of the same name (during World War I used as artillery barracks).
- After about 500 meters, you reach the upper part of the fort.
- It is possible to visit a post used as a Military Observatory (summit point of Mt. Enna – 975 m a.s.l.) by following a faint trail on the right into the woods and a steep concrete staircase, located 100 meters from the barracks.
Return to the Starting Point
- After a stop and a visit to the upper part of the fortification, go back to the point that marks the detour to Fort Enna.
- Turn left and go down the road built after the war (when Fort Enna was used as an ammunition depot).
- After 2.2 km, you reach Prà Lungo Locality and then Santa Caterina Pass (727 m a.s.l.).
- Take a complete left on asphalt in the direction of Enna/Torrebelvicino and, after about 100 meters, another left on the dirt roadway uphill.
- Past the bar, go into the woods, returning to the slope of Mount Enna overlooking the orographic left of the Leogra Valley.
- After about 1.2 km, you arrive in Contrada Maule, from which there is a splendid view of the Upper Leogra Valley.
- From here, descend on asphalt road, pass the Enna cemetery and arrive briefly at the starting point.
